The same sex marriage should be legalized in the Philippines right now. This is because there are so many people who oppose it. These people believe that legalizing gay marriage is one step too far, because they say that it will draw unnecessary attention to the issue and lead to a major rebellion among Christians.
However, these people fail to realize just how propaganda can be spread through social media and other outlets. One of the most powerful things about social media is its ability to reach two audiences — those living with the problem as well as those living without it.
This is why social media is also a powerful tool in spreading the awareness on same sex marriage. In a survey that was conducted in 2015, it was found out that just 4% of Filipino adults support gay marriage. Furthermore, a survey done by Pew Research Center in 2017 showed that 71% of Filipino respondents believe that gay and lesbian relations are morally wrong.
Now, the question is: will the legalization of same-sex marriage bring about conflict during the term of this administration? There are those who hope so but supporters hope otherwise. Leonard Wood, an international professor from George Mason University said: “It’s not going to destroy society. The number of individuals in the Philippines who support same-sex marriage is increasing, with 54% of Filipinos supporting it according to a survey by the Social Weather Station.
This is noteworthy because the Philippines has been lead by President Rodrigo Duterte who, during his campaign encouraged all citizens to get out and vote and he believes that “marriage between man and woman” should be open only for those who are married to each other.
This has brought much debate on how he can justify this belief when numbers show otherwise. Some believe this change in mindset towards marriage could result in more people also accepting divorce which would help increase family stability as well as reduce poverty from children having multiple families that they grow up not knowing their own parents.
